My Sunless Tanning Tips
Okay gals, let’s talk tanning!
Two years ago I shared my self tanning routine and figured it was time for an update! Although my process is still the same, I’ve been able to test a few more products so no matter your skillset or motivation, you can choose an option that will work best for you.

BEFORE YOU TAN:
Whether you are going for a spray tan or applying it yourself, you need to exfoliate. In the shower, I use an exfoliating washcloth or loofa to make sure I wash off any dead skin or previous tanner. This is an extremely important step, you cannot skip it! When you exfoliate your skin, this gives the tan the opportunity to lay evenly. You also want to make sure you shave / wax prior to tanning. I usually avoid shaving for a day or two so I don’t disrupt the tan. You can apply a tiny bit of a lightweight lotion to your hands, feet and elbows (since those are really dry spots).
CHOOSE YOUR TAN WISELY:
I can completely acknowledge that the world of self tanning is intimidating, especially for beginners. Luckily, you have options! There are so many ways to tan, here are a few of my favorites.
Spray tanning
In my opinion, this is the easiest option (but also expensive) and you want to make sure you find a trustworthy place. I prefer going to someone who hand sprays it vs. a booth because they’re able to be more precise and customize it to your skin tone. In Buffalo, I like Ashley at Buffalo Skin Boutique. She is really professional and make you feel extremely comfortable (considering I usually just wear underwear). I mostly spray tan before big events or vacations (so I can arrive tan/leave tan- you feel me?).
AT HOME Self tanner
There’s a few that I’ve found to be fool proof. I prefer applying tanner in mousse form with a mitt which makes things much easier. When you use the mitt, you want to make sure you're applying in circular motions so it doesn't streak. You want to "buff" it into your skin. The mousse is buildable and you can see what you're applying so if there are streaks, you can easily buff them out with a tiny dot of lotion applied to the mitt. I have Brian help me get my back or I put the mitt on a hairbrush and am able to get my back. I usually apply the mousse at night, sleep in baggy clothes and then shower the next morning. A few mousses I love:
Another easy way to apply are concentrated tanning drops (these are my favorite and they’re clean). You can put them in your lotion as a part of your post-shower routine and it is more of a gradual build. FYI - you cannot see what you’re applying so just make sure you wash your hands well afterwards- I’ve dyed my cuticles a few times from being careless.
BRONZER (That washes off in the shower)
If you’re looking for a little glow without any of the commitment or stress of messing it up… try out a bronzer. Think of them like makeup for your body, you can wash it off in the shower. These are a few of my favorite brands don’t smudge once they are dry and give you good coverage:
AFTER TANNING PRO TIPS:
If you're getting a spray tan or using a mousse, you want to make sure to give your skin some time to absorb the product. Wear loose clothing (I usually try not to wear a bra for a few hours). Try not to sweat or wear anything snug immediately after so your clothing doesn't rub anything off.
When it’s time to shower, make sure you DO NOT take a super hot shower. This will cause the tanner to become spotty and uneven. Take a warm & lukewarm shower, and try not to exfoliate the skin until you want to wash the tanner off.
Moisturize- this step is essential for making your tan last as long as possible and fade evenly. Self tanners can be drying to the skin so you want to make sure you’re moisturizing more than you typically would so that your skin stays hydrated and your tan stays even.
