At Home Hair Removal

REAL TALK: Now that we’ve all been at home for a few weeks, many of my usual beauty / self care appointments have been rescheduled to later dates. When life gets back to a normal pace, I HIGHLY encourage you to reschedule your appointments and give some extra love to your beauty professionals. In the meantime, I’m here to help. For a little extra back up and credibility, I reached out to my go-to professionals in the Buffalo area (Crista at The Villiage Browery and Kelly Burns at Your Face and Place) for their home hair removal tips so it’s not completely the blind leading the blind here. I heavily rely on their services throughout the year so this is all new to me!

I will be hopping on my stories later to share the wax and brow shaping so be sure to tune in for that, will be saved to my Skincare highlight.

let’s start with SHAVing

Last year, I discovered Billie razors and my life hasn’t been the same since. Okay, that’s a little dramatic but honestly- I donated all of my other razor blades. For shaving my legs, underarms and forearms- I will forever use Billie! It’s really reasonable - a starter kit is $9 and I get auto-delivery replacement razors every other month. These razors are the closet shave I’ve ever gotten- highly recommend for sensitive areas too. It’s best to use a fresh razor if you’re going to attempt bikini lines.

When shaving, it’s best to soften skin with a shaving cream, go over the sensitive areas once, rinse and hydrate. When shaving sensitive areas, I highly recommend TendSkin - helps with razor bumps and ingrown hairs.

Like many others, I’m blessed with a lot of hair on my face - I get this weird patch of hair that connects from my eyebrows to my hairline as well as some fur on my upper lip. For this, I use a dermaplaning technique to remove all of the peach fuzz with these Revlon Face De-Fuzzers ($5 for 2).

WAXING

At home waxing is terrifying to me but in spirit of desperate measures, your girl took one for the team and tried out joy + glee hair removal products for the first time yesterday. Typically, at home wax is not recommended for beginners but this stuff actually worked really well. I tried it on my toe hair (gross, sorry) first and then attempted my bikini area. If you’re used to getting waxed, it really wasn’t that bad. It definitely took a minute to get used to but once I got the hang of it and followed the directions, it was really easy. The kits come with a dry wipe which helps get excess wax off of your skin - it worked like a charm! Can’t say I’m prepared to give up getting sugared by Kelly (or maybe I’ll spring for laser someday) but in a pinch, these worked well.

Plucking + Tweezing

I’m currently growing a full-on unibrow which then connects to my hairline so things definitely need to be addressed. True story - Crista at the Villiage Browery has been the only one to touch my brows since 5th grade, she’s a brow genie. Her advice was not to touch them, if you can help it. Brows will get the best shaping of their life if they’re left to grow in but if you must shape them, she would recommend following the natural shape which usually mimics the shape of the eye. If you do pluck/wax pull in the direction of growth to avoid ingrown hairs. Trim if necessary, however the bushy look is “in” so this is a good time to test out that look as well as other beauty looks we’ve wondered about. I’ve been loving this tweezer set from Glamsquad (under $13). I like to use a small scissor and a dry mascara wand like this set for combing / brushing.

Another pro tip: if you want to avoid as much pain as possible, try hair removal after the shower bc the pores are open! Also remember, at 6 feet of social distance, no one can really tell what’s going on under your brows right now! ;)
