Current Haircare Routine

Let’s talk about

MY HAIRCARE ROUTINE

Let’s talk all things hair today! I’ll admit, my hair is particularly behaving more lately, thanks to pregnancy hormones and prenatal vitamins. Still, I thought it’d be fun to dive into some of my favorite, most-used items, from washing to styling. I’ve never really loved or enjoyed styling my hair, it’s something I’ll do, but I’d prefer to work smarter, not harder. I’ll try to extend the time between washes as much as possible but make the most of my washes. Let’s dive in!

As far as cuts/color goes, I like to get my hair cut every 10-12 weeks. When my hair starts to take a right turn into Tangletown, USA, and become super hard to brush, that’s my indicator that its time. I have seen Maggie at Saranac Salon in Buffalo for over eight years. I usually ask for a light dusting of a trim, cleaning up my layers, and giving a few framing pieces around my face. I don’t do a lot for color, but I see Michele at Studio 1404, and she is truly an artist. You’d never know when/where my color starts and stops, allowing me to push longer stretches between touch-ups. Michele works with my natural light brown and gives me highlights a few times a year, mimicking the natural ones I usually get from the sun. We’ll also do glazes. I have saved some of the products she uses to my “hair” highlight bubble on IG.

I switched to Navy Haircare over a year ago for shampoos and conditioners, and I’ve been enjoying their products. I love the smell and the way it makes my hair feel. Alternatively, I’ve used Alterna Anti-Aging multiplying volume shampoo and conditioner, Kerastase Densifique Densité shampoo and conditioner, and Pureology. In my humble opinion, the real game-changer has been this under $10 scalp brush that I use in the shower while shampooing. It allows me to really get a deep scrub and clean without using my nails. The stimulation also helps with regrowth; my hairstylist has commented that my scalp has never looked better. If you like stretching the time between washes and using dry shampoo, I can’t recommend this gadget enough! BK also uses it in the shower and loves it, and it rinses easily.

I have a very tender scalp, so brushing with a Wet Brush has been a game-changer. It doesn’t snag, and sometimes I’ll press on my scalp/hair so that the brush isn’t tugging on my scalp. A few years ago, a very kind reader introduced me to Rock & Ruddle brushes, and I’ve been addicted to mine ever since! They’re a bit of a splurge but have held up nicely, and I use them mostly on dry hair and styling. These microfiber hair towel scrunchies are great for letting your hair air dry and absorbing water.

I absolutely love and cannot live without my Gimme Beauty hair ties. They are so comfortable to wear and don’t snag the hair. They come in several widths to accommodate fine to thick hair and are especially great for working out. I love using these claw clips on days I’m trying to avoid having a crease/dent in my hair. I’ve traveled a bunch with them too, allowing them to bounce around at the bottom of my purse and they’ve held up nicely.

Several years ago, we invested in the Dyson Hair Dryer and quickly became obsessed. Unfortunately, we didn’t clean it properly, so after a few years, it died on us. In the meantime, I have been using the T3 dryer and love it but the Dyson dries much quicker, in my experience.

Regarding styling products, I try not to use a ton. However, I love Navy Haircare’s Whirlpool mousse and Pebble Beach spray. I use the mousse on wet hair, which adds a nice beachy texture when worn straight or wavy. The Pebble Beach is a great dry texture spray that adds a bit of grit without weighing down the hair or making it feel super dirty. Their Skipper flexible hold spray is great, I don’t use hairspray a ton, but this one works nicely when I do. My hairstylist recommended I use K18, which has done wonderful things for my hair. It took some time to see a difference, but I think it works well.

Regarding dry shampoos, no one can compete with Living Proof. I used to use their products exclusively but felt like the formulas have changed over the years, so I only use their dry shampoo now, for the most part, in addition to some other styling products. I toured their factory and met with the scientists behind the product. Its formula is patented, so you’ll never find anything like it. It was designed to absorb dirt, sweat, and oil. If you follow the directions on the bottle precisely, it really works. I say this because I wasn’t using it properly until I started following the instructions, and it makes such a difference.

I alternate between this one-inch wand and this barrel in one and a half-inch for looser curls. I saved several tutorials to my “hair” highlight bubble on Instagram.
