let’s talk

concealers

Concealer is a versatile makeup product that is a secret weapon in the beauty arsenal. Its primary purpose is to camouflage various skin imperfections, such as blemishes, dark circles, redness, and discoloration. For an everyday, all-purpose concealer, I like Lancome’s formula or Nars’ creamy one. When I want to cover stubborn acne and other blemishes, I’ll use Nars’ matte concealer, which works best by warming up the product on your finger and gently pressing it into the skin. A new favorite of mine is this YSL pen one with a radiant finish, which works nicely under my eyes. If you really struggle with dark spots, this Trish McEvoy Instant Eye Lift will instantly brighten and get rid of dark spots. Whenever I use a liquid concealer, I like to “set the wet” with this undereye-brightening powder that helps keep things in place all day long!

FOUNDATIONS

Foundation’s primary purpose is to even out your skin tone, providing a smooth and flawless base for the rest of your makeup. It can help to conceal imperfections, such as blemishes, redness, and discoloration, while also minimizing the appearance of pores and fine lines. Whether you prefer a natural, no-makeup look or a more glamorous and full-coverage finish, foundation offers the flexibility to achieve your desired level of coverage. I have combination oily/dry skin but running more on the drier side, so I’ve been favoring formulas that are hydrating and are buildable.

Starting from the most lightweight to the heaviest, I tried this Chanel foundation on a whim, and I almost wish I didn’t because I really love it, just not the price tag. It glides easily onto the skin and builds nicely. This Luminous Silk foundation has a powdery finish which is great if you run more on the oily side and don’t want that wet/glowy look. I’ve had phenomenal success with Lancome’s Teint Idole Foundation, I recently tried their newer Care & Glow formula and think it’s phenomenal if you want more of a dewy finish and have drier skin that lasts all day long. Lastly, I particularly love this CC formula with SPF 50 when I know I’m spending more time outside and need some coverage.

Applying these foundations can make a huge difference in how they look and feel on the skin. For starters, I love to use this primer which gives the skin an even base. I then like to use a damp beauty sponge to blend the product into the skin, I think it applies better than a dry brush. For small spots and quick touch-ups, I recently got this double-sided concealer brush and love how soft it is.

SHADE FINDING

It can be tricky to buy concealers and foundations online, so I have a few suggestions for you to find the perfect match for you! You can use Sephora’s Shade Finder, which I find to be pretty accurate. Lancome also has an easy-to-use Shade Finder on their website as well. Oftentimes, these quizzes will have you determine your undertone, which can be warm, cool, or neutral. A quick way to do this is by looking at the veins on your wrist. If they appear green, you likely have a warm undertone; if they're blue, you have a cool undertone, and if they're a mix of both, you probably have a neutral undertone. You can also ensure the site you’re buying/trying from has good return policies so you can try it on at home and in natural daylight (not bathroom light).

Thanks for reading!

Now, I'm curious to hear about your favorite concealer and foundation formulas. Are there any go-to products that have won a special place in your beauty routine?
