Gardening Season

Calling all of my fellow plant lovers! While it’s a bit too early for me in Buffalo to start getting my planted pots out and ready (there hasn’t been an April where it hasn’t snowed), I’ve already started thinking about it! Last year, I had a lot of fun decorating our outside area with different potted plants. It’s a fun project that brings me a lot of joy each year. I love to see how much they grow throughout the summer, and BK helps me keep everything watered!

While I really love and enjoy the process of upkeeping our garden, I am not very knowledgeable about the different types and names of plants. I usually plant from the heart, but I do have an excellent pro tip that I learned last year from this incredible community. There are several apps out there that identify plants, I learned that iPhone users can simply take a photo of a plant or flower and swipe up on the image. There should be a leaf icon that says “Look Up - Plant,” and it’ll show you what it is! Try it, and let me know how it works for you.

thrillers, spillers + fillers

When it comes to my potted plants, I usually like to go to a nursery and select a variety of thrillers, fillers, and spillers. Thrillers are the main focal point, what I like to use as a centerpiece plant with star quality, something tall and bold (like the spike you see above). Fillers add foliage or flowering plants to complement but not overwhelm the pot. They quite literally fill the empty space in the pots. And lastly, spillers are the ones that have a few minds of their own, they like to grow up and out of the pots, adding a beautiful visual depth. Vinca vines or sweet potato plants are my favorites for this!

I’m gearing up for another gardening season, looking forward to especially enjoying our plants this year… as we will be home with a newborn! Here are a few of my picks for all things gardening, indoor and outdoor!

let’s dig in

I bought these planters on a whim last year and have been incredibly impressed, I also have these ones. We use them indoors and outdoors for potted plants, and I also like to pop ferns in them (real and faux) for an easy, effortless, yet beautiful look! I love to use this watering can for my indoor plants; it looks chic on the counter but I figured I should probably get something bigger and more functional for outside like this one! BK uses this hose that shrinks down to nothing and is easy to store. This year, I’m living my best plant lady fantasy with a special basket for harvesting my spectacular peonies and hydrangeas. And of course, don’t forget the bud vases! I have this set, but for more of an ornate look, I love these ones. Are you into gardening season? Leave your best tips or favorite items below.
